International press has been swirling with rumors about Mexican footballer Francisco Sebastian Cordova Reyes making a move to Europe. Clubs such as Benfica in Portugal and Sevilla in Spain have been in the news lately but it wasn’t until the name Manchester United dropped yesterday that things really got interesting.
However, Cordova is a relatively new face to Liga MX and the Mexican National Team, having only just earned his first senior team cap last week against Trinidad and Tobago in the friendly held in Toluca. He did net a goal and garner much international attention as well as a second call up to the Nations League opener against Bermuda.
So who is the new face of the El Tri? Well he is a 22 year old product of Club America’s youth system. Having joined the youth academy in 2015. He was loaned out in 2016 to Alebrijes de Oaxaca but eventually returned to El Nido and to Club America’s youth side. In 2018 he was loaned to Necaxa and earned his first Liga MX start in August 2018. In 2019 he rejoined Club America and earned a first team spot.
Cordova finally exploded on the national scene during the biggest game of the year, El Clasico Nacional! In that game, Cordova scored two goals and gave Club America the victory over their eternal rival, La Chivas de Guadalajara. That performance propelled him to El Tri where Tata Martino is expected to give him plenty of opportunities in the Nations Cup. Should the youngster continue along this trajectory there is no doubt that good things will happen for him. Nations League, Olympic Games, and World Cup Qualifying are all around the corner.
Its no wonder European teams have their eye on him. Cordova is a quick and speedy attacking midfielder with an eye for goal. He is not only good at putting dangerous passes into the forward line but has an ability to get into goal scoring positions as well. The transfer market website lists his value at roughly $1.2 million dollars but that figure will surely sky rocket in the next several months.
Its official! CONCACAF released the qualification schedule for Qatar today and our Seleccion Mexicana begins its’ road to the World Cup in June of 2021. The Tricolor will host Jamaica on June 1, 2021, at the Estadio Azteca.
