Re: An Open Letter To Our Members and Supporters | The PVA Section is a NO “PU&$ CHANT” ZONE

Dear Members,

What an amazing summer! The Army attended eight games in less than 45 days and capped it all off with the Gold Cup final win in Chicago over our arch rival. We sang, we cheered, we partied hard for the entire Gold Cup and our reward was watching our Selección lift the cup for the 8th time in its history.

However, I am a firm believer that no organization can simply sit back on its success; personal growth does not come to those that simply laud their accomplishments without trying to improve themselves and their community.

One area where I think we can improve upon is the infamous PU%* Chant. For me and many others, it is no longer relevant to debate what the word means or doesn’t mean. Its simply a matter of respect and common courtesy. We should do our best to be good guests at all the stadiums that welcome us. As you know, there are many other rules that PVA  already follows. For example, we do not use smoke in the section without approval, we do not bring poles into the stadium, we do not activate incendiary devices, we do not throw items at security or players on the field. We follow all these rules to build trust with the team so that we can continue to have our section be a lively, music filled, supporter group section. So I ask you, what is one more rule?

Moving forward, we will adopt a  “No Pu%^ Chant” clause into our membership rules and code of conduct. While our code generally covers the chant we will specifically list it as unacceptable conduct. The same clause will be inserted into our ticket purchases pages. We already informed all PVA ticket purchasers that our section is a standing, cheering, and singing section. The same page will now inform potential PVA ticket purchasers that our section is a NO PU&% CHANT section too. For those of you that have already purchased a ticket for Mexico v. Argentina in San Antonio with PVA and disagree with our position or cannot abide by our request please email us for a full refund.

We understand that some of you will disagree with our position. But for Pancho Villa’s Army, growth isn’t just about more people, its about the right people. Its about people joining who wish to create an environment that feels welcoming to our LGBTQ Mexico fans. As an organization that has LGBTQ leaders and members we take this charge very seriously.

So if you are a supporter of our position, if you go to Mexico games, if you want to help us make a difference in changing the chant to something new please join us in the stands. Sit in our section, help us do the right thing by working with us to end the chant. We can’t do this alone. We need you in the stands with us. We need you talking to your friends and family one on one. We might not be able to change the entire stadium tomorrow but we can change ourselves.

On a personal note, many of you have seen me attend Mexico games this summer with my 6 year old son. My son is a HUGE Mexico fan! He bleeds green, white, and red. In Dallas, after an Ecuador goal kick, my son pulled me down to his level and asked me “What does putisimo mean?” Hearing his little voice say that word shook me. It shook me to the core. I was immediately stunned and repulsed. I want to continue to enjoy the games with my son, and in the near future my current 9 month old too. I would love to enjoy the game without having to explain the meaning of that word to them. I am not saying that stadiums are churches, but they aren’t night clubs either. We are Mexico fans! We are beloved everywhere we go! Any tournament, any event, el espíritu Mexicano siempre gana el corazón al mundo entero. We are more creative than this chant. We are better than this chant.

Sincerely yours,

Sergio
